Crowning A New WSOP King

Well, it is finally over, the World Series of Poker has crowned its new king this weekend, in the form of 21 year old Joe Cada. Who is now officially the youngest person to ever win the WSOP, and the take on the event was a mere 8.5 million dollars. Until yesterday was Peter Eastgate is roughly one year older than Joe. The third person on that list is Phil Helmuth who won it at the tender age of 24 in 1989.


Joe Cada is a poker pro from Shelby Township, Michigan, he has been playing poker since he was 16 years old. His mother is also a dealer at a local casino in Michigan. Titan Cue and Table congratulates Joe Cada on an amazing win this weekend.

Anyone who knows me knows that I would rather watch a great poker tournament than watch the baseball World Series. I can only tell who won that is because my brother made a concerted effort to tell me that the Yankees just won the World Series...again. A Very Fast Lesson in Shooting Pool

In my life, there are a few famous people that I would like to meet before I die. I met one of those people this week in the form of Mike Massey, Hall of Fame Trick Shot Artist. This was a great day to see some trick shots, I met Russ, the local APA President, outside of Fort Crook Billiards in Bellevue, Nebraska. I got their early, because I wanted to test drive my new Players Gold Hydrogel pool cue with a low-deflection shaft...more about that later. Just a few minutes before showtime, this very tall shadow walked into the door of the pool hall, I knew by the voice who it was.

He walked up to our table, he stuck out his hand, shook mine and said, "How are you doing? I am Mike Massey." You could have heard a pin drop inside my head, my only response was,"I know exactly who you are" and then introduced myself to him. He brought in his cues, balls and some cue balls. He laid out the 1-15 balls on the table, put the cue ball in the center and dropped all of them without missing a shot. He looked at me and asked me if I wanted to play a warm up game with him. Shocked, I said, "Absolutely!"

He just told me to go ahead and rack them and asked if I wanted to break. My response was, "If it is the only shot I am going to get, then yea, I want to break." Which got a round of laughter from everyone there. I brought out my Hydrogel, broke the rack and didn't drop a ball. My game was over he left me with my hands in my pockets and seven balls on the table.

He then started his show, he showed us some set up shots, I have his book World of Trick Shots and I recognized most of them. He then did what he does best jump shots, masses and finger shots. That was pretty amazing and now I want to do them. Then he did his famous boot shot, which he says is his favorite and he used it in Trick Shot Magic one year. He also said that he would guarantee that he could make the shot in less than 100 tries. He made it in one.

Mike Massey is quite possibly one of the nicest people I have met on this planet and he had stories to tell about every situation. He included the kids in his show as well and showed them how to make shots and set up a trick or two. Heck, he even included me, this has definitely started out to be the best October every, and there is still 26 days to go.

A Night Out with Jeanette Lee

As an avid indoorsman, one would think that I do not get out much. For the most part it is true, I don't. However, last night was one of those rare exceptions, it was important for me and the reputation of my company that I do so.

This journey started a couple of days ago when I was doing for a search for local pool leagues. Now that I am amassing a supply of cues, I think it is time that I go out and test drive some of them so that I can give my readers, fans and customers an accurate description and review of the pool cues that we sell. Last, night was not a night for me to go out and test drive and review a new pool cue, last night was for entertainment and watch for myself the billiard stylings of Jeanette "The Black Widow" Lee.

She started the evening out with a story about growing up in Brooklyn and her health issues and it was all very entertaining. She told us the story of how she got her nickname, The Black Widow in a pool hall in Brooklyn, how she climbed the ranks of women's professional billiards to be number one in the world. She also told us how she met her husband, billiard pro, George Breedlove and about her children and the troubles of not being able to have children, and broke the good new that she and George we expecting their first biological child through surrogacy.

Then, for one hour, Jeanette and George showed us a great display of trick shooting and explained the the details of english, jumping and masse. She even involved the audience of about 100 in some of the shots, to include about 4 kids. As if that weren't enough, she then brought six people up from the audience and showed them how to play 8 ball. It was a rough lesson for some, a learning lesson for others, and one guy even beat her.

Overall, this was a great night, I got to meet one of the legends of billiards, got to see some great pool players and met a nice lady and her husband. Taking a Hit

I have been playing pool a long time...longer than I can care to remember. Over that time I have become a respectable 8 ball player. Now, I am playing more nine ball trying to hone my second, third shot follow-ups and this new thing, artistic pool.

What is artistic pool, well if you have heard of guys like Willie Mosconi, Minnesota Fats and Steve Mizerak back in the late 70's and early 80's they were the best of the time. Back then it wasn't called artistic pool, it was trick shots. Making crazy shots that wouldn't happen under the normal play experience or having the cue ball dance around the table.

I have felt before that the best feeling in the pool hall is one of two things, dropping the eight (or nine) on the break and running the table. I still like it, but I have been working on a five bank trouble shot for the past month. It has been two to three hours of trying to make the same shot over and over and over again until I can consistently make that shot. I am just now getting the feel for it and I have dropped the shot about a dozen times, but never consecutively.

I thought this would be a walk in the park, it is the polar opposite of that. Not until recently did I learn that there is a difference between a standard pool cue and a masse cue. Just like there are differences between a jump-break cue and a standard cue. After some extensive research I finally found a company that makes masse pool cues. Poker Night Confusion...running short on chips

I got invited to go partake of some poker the other day, which is always a nice gesture if you want to lose a little money. The host of this little get together has one of my Texas Hold Em poker table tops and had it set up on his dining room table, which his wife loves!

I got their a bit early to watch set up and see how this fine table top looked in real life. I have to say it was not too bad. I liked it well enough, though I would rather play poker at my house, but sometimes you have to make a few sacrifices to play poker. That means my new poker buddy should have had a poker chip set that was about 3 times bigger than the one he had. Poker Night

I am really thankful that I have a house full of friends who are more than willing to fuel my fire to play Texas Hold Em poker, and come over and play on my Texas Hold Em poker table with me. I am even more happy that they buy stuff from me, especially in the poker categories.

This poker thing, it is new to me and I am consumed by the intricacies of the game. But, I don't think that I will ever do it for a living, just as a hobby for fun. I read an article somewhere, I can't remember where it was, but Doyle Brunson said that a professional poker player is a person who has no regard about losing money.

I didn't go into business to lose money, I went into business to have fun and enlighten everyone that can read about the joys of being an avid indoorsman. Honey, This is a Nice Surprise

As I spend the better part of my day sitting in my office/showroom/man cave. Sometimes practicing my nine ball, playing poker online or with friends or throwing darts just doesn't seem to be enough. I get bored with it sometimes and I just want to relax and watch television or play on one of my game systems.

As this is a great man cave, I have my standard issue big screen television to watch the big games and events, plus I have a couple of smaller, older televisions hanging about to watch the other games, shows or events. Now with the advent of the digital age, one of my televisions became obsolete a few weeks ago.

My wife, a wonderful and beautiful woman came to my aid. She had someone come and get the old television. It was kind of sad saying goodbye to an old, reliable friend, but his time and purpose had passed. For a week I had this big gap on my wall where that television used to be.

A couple of days ago, I went to run some errands and look for a new and improved television. I didn't have room for another big screen so I had to find something small that I could still see with my aging eyes. I found one at a local furniture store that I liked, and I went home to tell my wife all about it. She winced when I told her I was going to order it through one of my suppliers.
She just looked at me and said, "Go downstairs."

Huh? I went to the man cave as she requested and there it was. That beautiful television that I was going to purchase at the store was hanging from my wall, already hooked up and had an old trick shot video that I had playing. I was skeptical at first, it was a brand I had never heard of before, Coby. That off brand television had a great picture and it made my old video of Steve Mizerak doing trick shots looked fantastic! Now I am thinking that I am going to replace all of my televisions with Coby 19 inch flatscreen LCD monitors.

A Welcome Sight

Last week, a good friend of mine called me and told me he saw the coolest Texas Hold Em folding poker table he had ever seen. He has not been to the man cave in quite some time I think. He was singing praises about this table that he had seen and how badly he wanted it.

Trick Shots or Running the Table?

We had a little gathering Friday night with two other couples, after dinner the men and I went down to the man cave, each of us grabbed a pool cue off the wall and started to play some nine-ball. Now, having been a life-long 8-ball and 14 to 1 billiard player, I find nine ball to be faster paced and more involved in thinking ahead to the next shot. I derive a certain amount of pleasure from running the table off the break, or at least getting a nice string of 3-5 pocketed balls.

However, this weekend, because I have picked up nine-ball, it has made me think about the next shot and how I can make that happen. I have resorted to jump shots and my version of a masse. My masse is actually pretty week and looks more like a little league curve ball. This shot has saved me a couple of times and left me with a decent follow-up.

The debate now is what do I prefer, both actually, I can run a table fairly decently and I have a couple of cool shots that I can do. But, I was watching an artistic pool exhibition with Tim Chin a while ago, and I have watched Mike Massey and Steve Mizerak when I was younger on a number of occasions do trick shots as well, and I have to say I am rather impressed.

I also like watching Minnesota Fats and Willie Mosconi just ruin somebody's day by running the table in straight pool. Nobody likes being dismantled off the break by a guy in a bar with a house pool cue more than I do, but it happens. Sometime, I use a house pool cue on the "local pro" and when I win two out of three he is stumped.

I have found myself in a position where I like both now, and find myself incorporating just as many artistic shots into my game for a better second or third shot that I have in the past and if it gives me a decent run of 3-5 balls that makes even happier. There is no one pool cue that has made a difference in the way my artistic abilities have been trying to improve, I know, I have gone through the wall of pool cues I have to try. There is one pool cue on the wall that I find myself grabbing more now than any, it is my jump pool cue. It is considerably shorter than my standard pool cues, but the sole purpose of this pool cue is to make jump shots.

I know that this pool cue has been a valuable addition to my man cave, but the jump pool cue has vastly improved my artistic pool playing ability. I have even taken the jump pool cue to the pool hall with me to get in the practice of using it to improve the quality of my runs and to work on my artistic shots.

Beat By a Sneaky Pete

I had the nine ball team in the man cave this past weekend, we thought we woudl get in a little practice and a couple of cold home brews. There was a new guy someone had brought along, he wanted to get on the team and play some pool with us. I suppose this was his try out.

I had some new sticks that I wanted to try out and "test drive" them. I was getting some things together to set up a small nine ball tournament in the man cave. As I turned around, the new guy had "taken" one of my one piece, house pool cues off the wall. What's was wrong with him? He didn't even have his own cue.


We started our tournament, I watched him play his first game, he was good and he was using one of my crummy house pool cues. He beat out the first two guys quite handily and I had to face him next. I pulled out one of my favorite pool cues and he held onto that house pool cue, and he commenced to lay a whipping on me that I didn't think was possible.


So, after I lay there licking my wounds, I caught the guy breaking my pool cue in half. "Hey! That isn't my cue!" He turned and laughed at me for a second, I didn't realize that he had just beat me with a Sneaky Pete pool cue. He fooled me, I don't like that. As I have a poker table in my man cave, it is realistic to guess that I might play a little poker. I would not say I am very good at it, but I do find a certain amount of pleasure from playing poker. I had some guys over to play some Texas Hold Em, I wanted to show off my new, ultra-cool, casino-style poker table.

I began playing poker when I was in Europe with the U.S. Military, it is how we killed time when we were bored. I didn't know the hierarchy of the hands in the game of poker, so someone gave me a cheat sheet. Their game was seven card stud and no one explained to me it was the best five cards and not the whole set that won the game. Needless to say I got beat a lot. I couldn't bluff to save my life, I played every hand and was generally just bad.


I know a lot of people who spend a lot of time and money playing poker online, and I find myself, on occassion, playing as well. However, once or twice a month, I dust off my poker table, get out my poker chip set and my playing cards. I invite friends over and we play poker for a few hours, it really isn't about the money, we split the poker chips up between us and play until there is a winner.

My First Billiards Memory

I was thinking back to my first memory of playing pool. It took me back to the beginning of my passion for the game. I was so young and I did not think that it would amount to much.

I was probably five years old, when I picked up my first pool cue. That was 1968, my dad had a few of his friends over to have drinks, watch television, smoke and play pool in his downstairs game room, my first ever man cave. I was my dad's coach, telling him which shot to take next. I remeber one time he picked me up and let me take a shot for him.

They were cruddy, billiard room pool cues. They were not straight by any means. The pool balls were all dinged up and discolored as well. We still have that green and white flecked, six foot long mammoth. I could barely see over the rails to use the pool cue, so my dad's friend made me a stool to stand on to help me view the game better and eventually to play. I can also remember getting ready to take a shot with the pool cue my parents bought me, I was standing on my stool. It came out from under me and I cuffed my chin on the rail, and split my chin wide open. I think my dad about had a heart attack as I hung on the table, bawling and bleeding profusely on his felt.

As I grew older, I was able to play pool with my dad and his friends. I got good at playing and eventually they stopped coming over. Pretty soon I was beating my old man as well. I spent hours on that green monster with my little pool cue. I would be calling my shots and dropping the balls in the pockets. It wasn't just the pocketing, it was the sound the ball made when it started its journey to its final destination. It would hit the rails under the pockets, I can still hear the ball rolling under the table, then eventually a thud in a drawer at the end. The sound of a complete shot.

That table is still around, over 40 years old now. Sitting in my mom's barn, devastated in its own barren wasteland. The felt is loose, has holes and is faded. The pockets filled with nests of some unknown animal. It just sits there collecting dust, looking shabby. I am glad that we had that pool table around the house for me to keep playing as I did until I left home to go into the military. I find myself going out there and trying to play pool on that rickety old dog sometimes to this day.

Today, I have my own Man Cave, and in it sits my very own pool table. Its an eight foot beauty with copper felt. I play a couple of hours a day to keep my game sharp. The Beginning

This seems like an appropriate place to start on my trek into the wonderful world of blogging. I do this to amuse myself and maybe even drum up a little business for myself. You see, a number of years ago, my grandfather told me to find something I like to do and then find a way to get paid for it. At first, I thought it was cooking and I made a penny doing it, and I got real good, but it kinda made me an unpleasant person to be around. So, I up and quit doing it, never looked back, don't miss it, the book has been closed on that part of my life.

Now I start a new chapter, in a position that I am unfamiliar with, the role of stay at home dad. Well, being a busy body and wanting to do something, I decided to operate a website from my home. I thought this would be a good way to save a little money on daycare costs; I could work from home and watch my boys grow up at the same time. That lasted one day. This website has been all consuming and has even caused a few arguments in my house.

Now the hard part is over and I get to tell my stories about how it started and where it is going and what it is that I do. It is quite simple really, I sell great stuff so that everyman can have a little space to call his own with in his space he calls his with the family. It is the Man Cave. When I first started this I really focused on having the most pool cues available ever to anyone. Well, if I had known this before, I wouldn't have attempted it because everyone sells pool cues. As I was looking at my statistics one day, I saw that there was a bigger market and demand for poker supplies. It seemed crazy to me that people wanted poker tables, poker chips and playing cards. After a little research, I noticed that all the sites that I went to mentioned that poker is the third fastest growing spectator event in the world.

I finally upgraded my website to not only include the poker tables, but also poker chip sets and now playing cards. My first sale was a poker table. You could have knocked me over with a feather that day. Finally, after three months, I got a sale! My man cave was going to get a new toy that week. Well, at least get in the right direction towards a new toy. So, I sit here, living the dream and watch as my website slowly but surely is getting recognized, I am on every social network that I can be on. I have very good intentions of writing several times a week about the site, my man cave and my indoor adventures. Yep, I am living the dream.
